Isole Eolie – What's the concept?
The concept behind Mimmo Castellano's 1975 logo for Isole Eolie.
Isole Eolie (Aeolian Islands) is a volcanic archipelago made up of seven islands which are located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of Sicily.
Seeking to connect the islands and promote tourism Mimmo Castellano was commissioned to design a logo for the islands.
Following a period of research around the historic, mythic, religious and ethnic fields a logo with both a numerical and geological foundations was devised.
The logo is both numerical and alphabetical in nature. It weaves together seven elements and an “I” and an “E” to represent the seven islands and the initials of Isole Eolie.
The logo then features a geological dimension in the extrusion of these seven elements into cones, referencing the volcanic origins of the islands.
Mimmo Castellano was also commissioned to develop a visual identity as well as a way finding system that would help visitors navigate the islands.
