By the early 1970s, the visual identity of the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) had started to lack coherence. Vehicles carried several different colour schemes and two different logos.
As a new light-rail system was being built it was felt that Muni also needed an identity that would be capable of unifying its expanding services and present the transport network as being more modern.
In 1974, Muni commissioned Walter Landor & Associates to devise a new cohesive identity programme. This would include a new logo, colour palette, vehicle livery, bus stop signage and driver uniforms, at a reported cost of $100,000.
The previous logo contained the word Muni and the letters ‘SF’ in a ribbon. Landor removed the SF and compressed the letters so they would flow into one another. Parallel bands, rising, turning and returning, alluded to movement across San Francisco’s hills, while the continuous lines evoked transport routes and an interconnected system.
The tension between legibility and abstraction, in some ways both symbol and wordmark, the logo subverted the conventions of transport networks at the time, which often leaned into initials and directional arrows.
The logo was accompanied by what was named the ‘Sunset’ livery. Vehicles were white, with two bands of two contrasting oranges named ‘California Poppy’ and ‘Sunset Glow’. The bright colours vastly improved their visibility and recognition as these moved throughout the city. These were complimented by new brown driver uniforms.
The corporate identity began its roll out at the beginning of 1975, coinciding with the introduction of hundreds of new vehicles entering service, and ahead of the opening of the Muni Metro subway. Modernisation wasn’t just in the way Muni looked, but was tied to a significant period of modernisation of infrastructure.
Despite this, the response was initially muted, with The San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen adding criticism, referring to the symbol as the ‘Muni Worm’. While intended as an insult, the nickname stuck and was embraced.
In 1996, Muni launched a competition to find a new symbol, inviting students at San Francisco’s Academy of Art College to submit proposals with the chance of winning $5,000.
The winning design featured a winged disk, but substantial public opposition prevented its introduction. The worm survived further uncertainty following the creation of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency in 1999.
Although its original Sunset livery was gradually replaced by silver and red, Landor’s logo remains in use across vehicles, signage, uniforms and now merchandise.

That's one pretty impressive logo design. Even with its worm-like aesthetic, I can see the effort that was put into it. Walter Landor did a fantastic job with it.
